Michie: Communication should be honest, open and transparent
Speaking at the awards ceremony, Professor Susan Michie said she was proud to receive such an award and said:
“How does psychology help fight Covid-19? I want to share this with you. Due to the Covid-19 epidemic, governments around the world have asked people to change their behavior. We developed different behavioral habits, such as physical distance, wearing masks, and isolating ourselves. But following the rules depends on ability, opportunity and motivation. These three factors directly affect behavior. Psychologists play an important role in understanding and evaluating behaviors in order to cope with Covid-19. First, we must target politicians to change their behavior. The first step to change is to make recommendations for changing behavior. Our research team identified 93 different techniques that allow people to change their behavior. The use of these techniques varies according to the societies, conditions, and behaviors that want to be changed. For example, if you want to follow quarantine rules, do not increase motivation with methods such as fines; You aim to improve your opportunities by increasing social, financial and practical resources. Reliable leadership is important at this point. Communication should be honest, open and transparent. It is necessary not only to tell what to do, but also to explain to the citizen the reason for this recommendation. It is necessary to know the society well, listen to them and involve them in the decision-making process. Governments don’t always offer what we offer, but we try to give the best advice. I hope that behavioral scientists in Turkey benefit from a psychologist from the government. Today, no one and no government can defend itself. People are interconnected, and the solutions to be produced must be global. We can only protect ourselves by protecting each other. “
