Nacho Sánchez Amor, the European Parliament’s rapporteur on Turkey, the European Union’s legislature, said the HDP would have “very serious consequences” for Turkey’s closure.
Amor made a statement on behalf of the Group of Socialists and Democrats (S&D) in the European Parliament in connection with the lawsuit against the HDP.
“The HDP’s demands, the closure of the appeals are a clear message that the Turkish authorities and the General Directorate of Human Rights are unwilling to move forward with reforms in the rule of law. This claim is a blow to fundamental principles. It would be a sad step to further the authoritarian tendency. The following statements were made in the continuation of the statement:
“Only yesterday, HDP MP and human rights activist Ömer Faruk Gergerlioğlu lost his parliament and immunity because it was published on social media. He is now expected to be arrested at any moment. On the same day, there was a politically motivated ban to ban Turkish officials. after the summons began the trial.
We call on the Turkish government to respect pluralism and freedom of expression, in accordance with Turkey’s constitutional principles and Turkey’s international obligations. Democratically elected opposition parties must operate freely. If the Turkish authorities apply a threat to the hdp, the relations between Turkey and the EU will have serious consequences. “
