The robot dog Spot, which Boston Dynamics sold a large portion of the company to Hyundai last December, could be used for commercial purposes. Marc Raibert announced at the Web Summit that 350 of the Spot robots on sale since mid-2020 have been commissioned by companies.
Robot Dog Spot has new features
Boston Dynamics, which aims to increase the functionality of Stains, especially in construction areas and areas where it will be dangerous for people to enter, announced the innovations coming to Stain. The robot dog is now much more functional and self-sufficient. Innovations include the Spot Arm, a robotic arm that will help you lift, grasp, move, position, and drag the Spot, a scanner-based Scout program, and a Spot Cam camera with thermal imaging capabilities.
Adding a goal is the first step. The most important thing is that the arm is used functionally by the robot. We saw the prototype of the arm added to the Spot in the first generation Spots in 2016. In the video released in 2018, Spot, who added an arm, opened the doors and helped his sleeveless friend. As seen in the new video, the robot’s legs and body work in a very integrated way with the arm when dragging, lifting or moving the body. Still, the new goals are not so strong. The stain drags instead of lifting the concrete block.
Browser-based Scout software allows you to remotely control Spots. However, Boston Dynamics says it is not yet integrated with the robotic arm. Once this integration is complete, it will be possible to control the robot dog hundreds of miles away and use its arm in difficult work areas.
Existing Spots can run for 90 minutes on a single battery, as noted in the Web Summit session. However, the company is taking steps in this regard, working on a system in which robots can be completely self-sufficient. Points approaching charging stations with reference codes, such as a QR code, communicate with the charging port on the stand and can automatically fill themselves.
Robot dog spots sell for $ 75,000 each. That is, it is not yet available to everyone. Only large companies add Stains to their companies when they are sure it will be effective. The current price of the Spot with Scout and Spot arm additions has not yet been announced. But as you can see in the videos, the variety of what you can do will be reflected in the prices.
