Van, Siirt and Hakkari provinces bordering the foothills of Mount Kato Çatak area 42 kilometers away Övecek Quarter was evacuated in 1995 due to security. Ayşe and Derviş Muhan with 7 children settled in Van.
Unable to find work here, Mohsen Darwish went with his family to various provinces of Turkey. Longing for his hometown, the family returned to Van years later. Ayşe and Derviş Muhan, a couple living in the city center for a while, once decided to settle in the neighborhood they evacuated 11 years ago.
It is difficult to reach the lone residents of the neighborhood, whose roads are closed due to snow in winter, and the couple earns a living by shepherding in the Muhan area.
Muhan, who has been grazing sheep and goats belonging to some of his relatives for years in the village, which has been turned into a neighborhood by the laws of the metropolitan area, lights his house with a gas lamp and receives news from the world with a battery-powered hand radio.
The couple, who cook at home, said they never wore a mask during the coronavirus.
Dervish and Ayşe Muhan settled in the neighborhood where their house was destroyed, some of them organized an untouched school. The couple’s children live with their grandparents in downtown Van.
Derviş Muhan said, “Welcome. We are in our village. We look after the animals here. We are in spring and winter. There is no electricity. There is no virus in the village. There is no virus in the city, but we do not wear masks here.” .The disease is here.
